Whakarewarewa Living Māori Village
A living village where Tūhourangi/Ngāti Wāhiao still cook in steam boxes and bathe in thermal pools.
Why go
See daily life still lived around boiling springs and geysers, guided by the people who call it home.
Whakarewarewa is a genuinely inhabited geothermal village, home to the Tūhourangi and Ngāti Wāhiao people who have lived among the steam and boiling springs for generations. Guided by residents, you walk lanes where families still cook corn and hāngī in natural steam boxes, bathe in communal thermal pools, and watch the Pōhutu Geyser erupt beyond the village. Cultural performances and a hāngī lunch bring the traditions to life.
