Waitangi Treaty Grounds
Birthplace of modern NZ — the 1840 Treaty site, carved meeting house and war canoe.
Why go
It's the single most important historical site in the country, and the cultural performance and carvings are genuinely moving — essential context for the whole trip.
This is where the Treaty of Waitangi was first signed on 6 February 1840 between the British Crown and Māori rangatira — the founding document of modern New Zealand. The grounds hold the historic Treaty House, the elaborately carved Te Whare Rūnanga meeting house, the world's largest ceremonial war canoe Ngātokimatawhaorua, and the Museum of Waitangi. Guided tours and a cultural performance with haka and waiata bring the story to life.
