Tarawera Trail
Lakeside forest track along Lake Tarawera to a hot-water beach at the foot of the volcano.
Why go
A forest-and-lake hike that ends at a dig-your-own hot-water beach beneath a volcano.
This scenic track winds through native forest along the shore of Lake Tarawera, with the brooding bulk of Mount Tarawera — which erupted catastrophically in 1886 — rising across the water. The reward at the far end is Hot Water Beach, a lakeside bay where geothermal water seeps up through the sand so you can dig your own natural hot pool. Most walkers take a water-taxi one way and hike the other.
