Taranaki Falls Walk

walk walkscenic

Easy 2-hour loop from Whakapapa to a 20 m waterfall over an old lava flow.

Why go

A short, rewarding alpine walk to a dramatic waterfall — the easy counterpoint to the big Tongariro Crossing.

This well-formed loop track from Whakapapa Village in Tongariro National Park leads to Taranaki Falls, where the Wairere Stream drops about 20 metres over the edge of an old andesite lava flow into a fern-lined pool. The circuit crosses open tussock and beech forest with views to Ngāuruhoe and Ruapehu, and makes an excellent gentler alternative when the Alpine Crossing is weathered out.
