Ship Creek
Two short boardwalk loops — kahikatea swamp forest and a windswept dune lake — on the South Westland coast.
Why go
Two contrasting short walks — primeval swamp forest and a wind-sculpted dune lake — that showcase wild South Westland in under an hour.
Halfway between Haast and Knights Point, Ship Creek is a wild, driftwood-strewn stretch of coast with two easy self-guided boardwalk loops. The Kahikatea Swamp Forest Walk winds through an eerie, moss-hung stand of ancient white pine, while the Dune Lake Walk climbs to a lookout tower over a dark tannin-stained lake and the pounding Tasman surf. Interpretive panels explain the fragile dune and wetland ecology.
