Peter's Lookout
The classic Lake Pukaki lookout framing turquoise water and Aoraki/Mt Cook on the horizon.
Why go
The definitive Lake Pukaki shot — electric-blue water pointing directly at the country's highest peak.
A simple roadside pull-off on State Highway 8 along the eastern shore of Lake Pukaki, Peter's Lookout is the postcard view of the Mackenzie: impossibly turquoise glacial water, its milky blue born of rock flour from the mountains, leading the eye straight up the lake to the snowy summit of Aoraki/Mt Cook. On a clear day it's one of the most photographed panoramas in New Zealand.
