Napier Art Deco
A whole city rebuilt in 1930s Art Deco after the 1931 quake — best explored on foot.
Why go
There's nowhere else quite like it — an entire city frozen in 1930s design, best appreciated on foot.
Levelled by a 1931 earthquake, Napier was rebuilt almost entirely in the Art Deco and Spanish Mission styles of the day, giving it one of the most concentrated and best-preserved 1930s townscapes in the world. The compact centre — Tennyson and Emerson Streets, the Daily Telegraph and ASB buildings, the seafront Marine Parade — is made for walking, with self-guided maps and guided walks from the Art Deco Trust.
- Time
- 2–3 h
- Price
- free to walk; guided walks ~$25–45
