Above Lake Tekapo, the University of Canterbury's Mt John Observatory caps a summit with a 360-degree panorama over the turquoise lake and the Mackenzie Basin — by day a drive-up (or walk-up) lookout with a summit café, by night the heart of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve and its renowned stargazing tours.
