Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings
10 m carvings of Ngātoroirangi, reachable only by boat or kayak on Lake Taupō.
Why go
An only-from-the-water icon of Lake Taupō — best on a sailing cruise or a guided kayak at golden hour.
Carved into the lakeside cliffs at Mine Bay in the late 1970s, these striking contemporary Māori carvings depict the visionary ancestor Ngātoroirangi who guided the Tūwharetoa and Te Arawa people to the area. They face the water and can only be seen from a boat, kayak or sailing cruise.
