Manapouri
Lakeside village and departure point for Doubtful Sound cruises; a quiet gateway to Fiordland.
Why go
The launch point for Doubtful Sound — a wilder, quieter alternative to Milford, reached across a lake most people never expect to be so beautiful.
This small, unhurried village sits on the shore of beautiful Lake Manapouri, ringed by bush-clad mountains and often described as New Zealand's loveliest lake. From Pearl Harbour on the Waiau River, boats depart across the lake to West Arm, where a coach carries visitors over Wilmot Pass to the remote grandeur of Doubtful Sound. Manapouri is far quieter than nearby Te Anau, making it a peaceful base for the deep southern fiords.
