Pull-off with the postcard view up the turquoise lake to Aoraki/Mount Cook.

Why go

That impossibly blue lake leading the eye to the country's highest peak — one of the South Island's signature views.

Lake Pukaki's glacier-fed water is an almost luminous turquoise from suspended rock flour, and the lookouts along its southern and eastern shores frame the postcard view straight up the lake to Aoraki/Mount Cook. The main pull-off near the salmon shop at the southern end is the classic stop on the drive into the Mackenzie.
