Hokitika Gorge
Unreal turquoise glacial water under a swing bridge, 33 km inland from Hokitika.
Why go
One of the West Coast's most photographed spots — the colour genuinely looks digitally enhanced in person.
A short loop track through rimu forest leads to a swing bridge over the Hokitika River, where rock flour ground from the Southern Alps turns the water an almost luminous milky-turquoise. A second viewing platform and a riverbank descent give different angles on the colour, which shifts with the light and recent rain.
