Glenorchy

town townscenicgateway

Tiny, spectacular village at the head of Lake Wakatipu; gateway to Paradise, the Routeburn and Dart River.

Why go

A jaw-dropping 45-minute drive from Queenstown delivers you to a picture-perfect village at the doorstep of some of the South Island's greatest wilderness.

Reached by one of New Zealand's most scenic drives along the northern shore of Lake Wakatipu, Glenorchy is a tiny settlement dwarfed by the soaring peaks of the Humboldt and Richardson Ranges. Its red-roofed wharf shed and lagoon are among the most photographed scenes in the country, and the village is the launching point for the Routeburn Track, Dart River jet-boat trips, and the fabled Paradise valley beyond. Middle-earth was filmed all around here.
