A short scenic helicopter flight lifts you from Franz Josef village onto the upper Franz Josef Glacier, far above the terminal face, where guides fit you with crampons and lead a walk through a shifting world of ice seracs, deep crevasses, and glowing blue ice caves. All gear is provided and no prior experience is needed, though a reasonable level of fitness helps. It's the only way to actually set foot on the glacier since the valley walk-up route closed.
