The “mirror lake” — dawn reflections of Aoraki and Mt Tasman on an easy loop.

Why go

The dawn reflection of the Southern Alps in the lake is one of New Zealand's most iconic images.

Lake Matheson, near Fox Glacier, is famous as the 'mirror lake' — on a still morning its tannin-dark water reflects Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman, the country's two highest peaks. A flat, well-formed loop track through kahikatea forest reaches the View of Views and Reflection Island jetties.
