Fantail Falls
Pretty roadside waterfall fanning over rock into the Haast River — a five-minute stop on the Haast Pass drive.
Why go
A graceful fan-shaped waterfall just minutes from the road — an effortless, photogenic break on the Haast Pass.
A short, easy walk from a signed car park on the Haast Pass highway leads to Fantail Falls, where a tributary spreads into a delicate fan of water as it tumbles over a rock face into the braided Haast River. Visitors have built a scatter of small stone cairns on the shingle riverbed below the falls. It's a quick, worthwhile leg-stretch amid the beech forest, easily paired with the nearby Blue Pools.
