← Day 14

Diamond Lake & Rocky Mountain

walk walkviewpointscenic

Wanaka viewpoint hike with Roys-Peak-calibre lake and mountain views for far less effort and far fewer people.

Why go

Roys-Peak-quality views over Lake Wanaka for roughly half the effort — and without the queue for a photo at the top.

A short drive from Wanaka toward Glendhu Bay, this track climbs past pretty little Diamond Lake and up the flanks of Rocky Mountain to a series of lookouts over Lake Wanaka, the Matukituki Valley, and the surrounding peaks. A steady but far shorter climb than Roys Peak delivers comparably sweeping alpine-and-lake panoramas, usually with only a fraction of the crowds. You can turn back at the first Diamond Lake lookout for a quick outing or push on to the summit for the full reward.
