Craters of the Moon

geothermal geothermal

Steaming vents and bubbling mud craters on an easy boardwalk loop near Taupō.

Why go

A low-key, low-cost geothermal walk with big steam vents — a good leg-stretch without the Rotorua crowds or prices.

A community-run geothermal field just north of Taupō, Craters of the Moon is an easy ~45-minute boardwalk loop past steaming fumaroles, bubbling mud and collapsing craters — a landscape made more active by the lowering of the water table when the nearby Wairākei power station opened. It's cheaper and quieter than the big Rotorua parks.
