Cape Foulwind Seal Colony
Clifftop walkway near Westport to a New Zealand fur seal colony and a lonely coastal lighthouse.
Why go
Watch wild fur seals — and pups in season — from a clifftop platform on a wild, windswept stretch of coast.
An easy clifftop walkway runs along the rugged Cape Foulwind coast just south of Westport, linking a viewing platform above a permanent New Zealand fur seal colony to a squat white lighthouse. Below the platform, seals haul out on the rocks year-round, and in spring and summer boisterous pups tumble in the shallows. The name is Captain Cook's — he anchored here in 1770 and was blasted by a gale.
