Scenic SH6 river gorge crossed by New Zealand's longest swingbridge, a highlight of the Nelson-to-Coast drive.

Why go

Cross New Zealand's longest swingbridge high above a dramatic river gorge on the scenic drive to the Coast.

The Buller River carves a deep, bush-clad gorge that the SH6 highway threads on its way from Nelson to the West Coast, with sheer rock walls and the tea-coloured river below. At the Buller Gorge Swingbridge park you can walk across the country's longest swingbridge (110 m) to the far bank, where short trails lead to old gold-mining relics and a fault line from the 1929 Murchison earthquake. Thrill-seekers can zip back across the gorge on the Comet Line flying fox.
